The Referral Process

'Going Off Island for Treatment'
Sometimes it may be necessary for you to travel for treatment that is not available on your island. A simple guide to off island treatment has been produced by the Health and Social Services Department, the Social Security Department and the Medical Specialist Group.
>Health Information Guernsey provides a free and confidential, independent information service for islanders travelling to the UK or Jersey for medical or surgical treatment and consultations.  We can arrange to send you an Information Pack to support your travel to the UK.  Within the pack we provide information about what to do before you travel to hospital, what to take, the facilities, nearby accommodation etc, so please contact our office on 01481 707470 where we can arrange to send you a pack specific to the Hospital or Treatment Centre you are visiting. Alternatively you can fill in one of our Hospital Pack Request Leaflets that you will receive from the Social Security Department once your referral process is underway.

Important Information concerning change to the Reciprocal Health Agreement

From 1 April 2009 the Reciprocal Health Agreement with the UK ended.  You, the patient will be covered for any unexpected medical treatment you may require in addition to the reason for your referral, however you are only covered for the time it takes to complete the appointment/hospital stay.  If you choose to travel early or stay on after your appointment the States of Guernsey will not be responsible for the cost of any medical treatment you may require during the extended period.

Please be aware that no cover is provided by either the Health & Social Services Department (HSSD) or the Social Security Department (SSD) for anyone travelling with you.  All local residents travelling to the UK can access emergency treatment from a GP, A&E Department or Walk in Centre but all further care will incur a charge.  You are therefore advised to ensure that anyone travelling with you is aware of this and that they obtain appropriate insurance.
